Welcome

Project Harar is a health outreach charity that secures professional surgical treatment and after-care for children and young people with severe facial disfigurements from remote and very poor areas of Ethiopia.

Project Harar’s aim is to give and restore proper facial function and good appearance to our young patients – and with that, their independence, dignity and a place in their home community.

We treat all patients no matter what the cause of their disfigurement. We see a range of conditions including:

cleft lip and palates
noma a devastating facial infection
animal attack
tumours
accidental injuries

Sadly, many people with facial disfigurements experience discrimination and social exclusion. Often individuals with a facial ‘difference’ are ostracised by their communities, denied their right to a school-place and in some cases are forced to become street-children. Project Harar encourages children leading ‘hidden’ existences to come forward and offers them a new chance in life.

Founded in 2001 for the treatment of two street children with noma and hyena bite wounds, in 2008 Project Harar secured medical care for 290 young patients. With your support, in 2009 we will rebuild the faces and transform the lives of over 400 young Ethiopians.
